Title of Project- Serving the Elderly through Music

 

Abstract of Project- For my EDGE project I put together a mini recital and performed it at a Las Vegas nursing home. The recital consisted of all piano music, some arrangements, and some popular songs from the 1900’s, as well as many original compositions.

 

Larger Purpose- There is a lot I was able to gain from doing this as my project. I have always been very passionate about music and had the opportunity to more fully develop my talents through completing this project. By organizing the recital, I was able to see how much I am truly capable of doing in the world of music and by performing it for a nursing home, I was not only be able to gain experience performing in front of an audience but I was blessed with the feelings of satisfaction that come only through serving your community.

 

Project Goal- For my EDGE I put together a recital for residents of a local Las Vegas nursing home. In order to accomplish this, I spent many hours composing music and organizing the recital itself with the nursing home and with those who were able to give me insight on the collection of pieces that I should perform.

 

Outcomes- I was able to create a special experience for the residents of the nursing home- one that most of them may not get again. As I played popular songs, the old folks sang along and as I performed my original compositions, they cheered and came up to thank me for taking the time to visit them. I gained knowledge of my abilities to possibly succeed in the music world and also a better understanding of the type of composer that I have the potential to become. I got a lot of feedback from the residents, after my recital, that inspired and uplifted me, giving me confidence in my musical abilities. The woman who I set up the recital with praised my skills on the keys and thanked me for all I did in organizing the recital.

 

Deliverables- I can turn in recorded forms of correspondence between myself and the nursing home as well as pictures from the event and copies of flyers or other forms of advertisement I may end up using to promote the recital. I can always include a log of all of the time I spent composing and arranging music.

 

I will be turning in a log with phone calls between Jan, the activities coordinator at the nursing home, and myself. I will be providing pictures and videos from the event and copies of flyers I used to promote the recital. I will also include a written log of all of the time I spent composing and arranging music.

Costs- My costs were the gas that I use to drive from Cedar City to Las Vegas to perform the recital as well as the office supplies I ended up using to advertise my performance and the time I sacrificed to write the music and prepare the songs for the recital itself.
